Jeff was born on the South coast of Britain and has spent much of his life on, in or at least near the sea. Starting out as a deck hand for the Red Funnel company of Southampton, he trained as a volunteer lifeguard with the Inshore Rescue Service, was Waterfront Director at a childrens' camp in America, qualified as a kayak lifeguard and spent many years teaching newcomers to the sport and surfing.

Despite his love of the sea, he has spent most of his life on land. Working with youth organisations, he trained in mountain leadership and specialised in teaching navigation and emergency survival skills.

Professionally, he was a carpenter and progressed to running his own sub-contracting company before becoming a project manager and teaching apprentices. Since moving to the Czech Republic, he has exchanged the sea for rivers and now enjoys white-water kayaking as well as camping, exploring and photographing the Beskydy and Jeseniky mountains.

In addition to the outdoor programme, he teaches general English, business English and technical English for the construction industry
